{"id":51274,"date":"2016-03-01T16:47:24","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T00:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/?p=51274"},"modified":"2016-10-07T12:23:40","modified_gmt":"2016-10-07T19:23:40","slug":"hacked-spyware-company-seems-to-have-released-more-mac-malware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/hacked-spyware-company-seems-to-have-released-more-mac-malware\/","title":{"rendered":"Hacked Spyware Company Seems to Have Released More Mac Malware"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/imac-malware-600.jpeg\" alt=\"Malware\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/imac-malware-600.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/imac-malware-600-150x75.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/imac-malware-600-300x150.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hacking Team, an Italian company which specialises in helping governments and intelligence agencies spy on their citizens, didn&#8217;t have the best year in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>It suffered an <a title=\"Link to Graham Cluley article about Hacking Team hack\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcluley.com\/2015\/07\/hacking-team-hacked-bad-news-company-helps-governments-spy-citizens-customers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">embarrassing hack<\/a>,\u00a0which saw its source code and entire email archive <a title=\"Link to article about leaked email archive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcluley.com\/2015\/07\/hacking-team-email-archive-searchable-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">leaked online<\/a>\u00a0along with zero-day vulnerabilities it had been keeping up its sleeve (to sell to intelligence agencies prepared to stump up enough cash) released into the wild.<\/p>\n<p>Some predicted that the future didn&#8217;t look too bright for Hacking Team, as it was forced to tell its government customers to <a title=\"Link to article about Hacking Team customers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grahamcluley.com\/2015\/07\/hacking-team-tells-government-customers-stop-using-spyware-following-hack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">stop using its spyware<\/a> until it had restored some semblance of control over its network.<\/p>\n<p>But now, over six months on, is it business as usual?<\/p>\n<p>As security researcher Pedro Vila\u00e7a describes (in a post unflatteringly titled <a title=\"Link to Pedro Vila\u00e7a's blog\" href=\"https:\/\/reverse.put.as\/2016\/02\/29\/the-italian-morons-are-back-what-are-they-up-to-this-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">&#8220;The Italian morons are back! What are they up to this time?&#8221;<\/a>), a fresh new version of Hacking Team&#8217;s RCS (Remote Control System) spyware has been uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>As Mac security researcher Patrick Wardle <a title=\"Link to Patrick Wardle's blog\" href=\"https:\/\/objective-see.com\/blog\/blog_0x0D.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">describes<\/a>, this sample of the malware is unusual insomuch as it uses a variety of techniques to avoid detection and analysis, being obfuscated with different encryption methods.<\/p>\n<p>Intego&#8217;s own research team, however, say that the malware does not pose significant challenges for them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/antivirus-internet-security-x8\" target=\"_blank\">Intego VirusBarrier<\/a> will\u00a0detect the malware as <strong>OSX\/Crisis<\/strong> (a name shared with the Crisis\u00a0malware family, based upon Hacking Team&#8217;s code). Some other anti-virus vendors are referring to the malware as &#8220;OSX\/Morcut.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ht.jpeg\" alt=\"Hacking Team\" width=\"600\" height=\"412\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ht.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ht-150x103.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/ht-300x206.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whether it really is the work of Hacking Team, rising phoenix-like from the flames of its own ironic hacking disaster, is hard to confirm \u2014 as it might equally be possible that a third-party is using Hacking Team&#8217;s code to create their own malware. However, the smart money is pointing once again to the Italian firm.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that unless you are using a computer which is of interest to a government or intelligence agency, chances are that you will not have much to fear from this particular strain of Mac malware.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a title=\"Link to Mac Observer article\" href=\"http:\/\/www.macobserver.com\/tmo\/article\/hacked-hackers-are-back-with-recycled-mac-malware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Mac Observer<\/em><\/a> even if you aren&#8217;t running an anti-virus program on your Apple computer or laptop (shame on you if that&#8217;s the case), there is a simple way to tell if you might be infected with this particular malware:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Odds are your Mac hasn&#8217;t been hit with this new\u2014and mostly meh\u2014malware, but if you want to double check, look in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">~\/Library\/Preferences\/8pHbqThW\/<\/span> for the file <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Bs-V7qIU.cYL<span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Regardless, it always makes sense to keep your Mac anti-virus defences up to date, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/15-mac-hardening-security-tips-to-protect-your-privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\">follow best practices<\/a> to reduce the chances of a security breach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hacking Team, an Italian company which specialises in helping governments and intelligence agencies spy on their citizens, didn&#8217;t have the best year in 2015.
