A nonprofit organization called the Family Online Safety Institute is lobbying for president-elect Barack Obama to name a “national safety officer” to serve under the chief technology officer, which Obama is to name soon. The Washington Post<\/a> reports that this group is requesting a number of initiatives to help fight against online dangers. “Protecting children and teens from the new dangers presented by the proliferation of social networks, blogs, instant messaging and cellphones is seen as a growing challenge.”<\/p>\n

But this may not be enough. Nancy Willard, executive director for the Center for Safe and Responsible Internet Use said, “Young people who are at the greatest risk online are the ones who are already at greater risk in the real world… We have to stop thinking about Internet safety as a technology issue and recognize that it is an extension of youth risk behavior.”<\/p>\n
