The problem is they used to affect every site you visited.<\/p>\n<p>With Safari 11, this changed. Websites can now be customized on an individual basis. A sheet will open beneath the site\u2019s address in the toolbar, giving you access to\u00a0the options outlined below for amending how it is displayed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use Reader when available<\/strong> determines whether Safari\u2019s Reader feature is triggered on supported pages, such as\u00a0the individual article pages of a news site. Reader strips all layout, adverts and cruft from a web page, leaving only the content and images.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73528 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-reader-1024x542.jpg\" alt=\"Use the AA button to adjust Reader\u2019s appearance\" width=\"1024\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-reader-1024x542.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-reader-150x79.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-reader-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-reader-768x406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-reader-657x348.jpg 657w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use the <strong>AA<\/strong> button to adjust Reader\u2019s appearance (text size; page background color; typeface), although be aware these settings are universal, and not defined on a per-site basis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enable content blockers<\/strong> toggles whether ad-blocking extensions are active for the site in question. Note, however, this option only affects extensions that use Apple\u2019s content-blocking API, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/1blocker.com\" target=\"_blank\">1Blocker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-73531 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-zoom-1024x542.jpg\" alt=\"Safari Page Zoom is one of the most useful options\" width=\"1024\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-zoom-1024x542.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-zoom-150x79.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-zoom-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-zoom-768x406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.intego.com\/mac-security-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/safari-11-customization-website-zoom-657x348.jpg 657w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Page Zoom<\/strong> is one of the most useful options. It\u2019s initially set to 100%, and\u00a0altering that value\u00a0adjusts the size of the site\u2019s text and images;\u00a0it may also affect its layout. Various options are available, from 50% through to 300%. You can more quickly adjust the zoom level with the keyboard shortcuts <strong>Command++<\/strong> and <strong>Command+-<\/strong>; <strong>Command+0<\/strong> resets the site\u2019s zoom level to \u2018actual size\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Auto-Play<\/strong> starts out set to <strong>Stop Media with Sound<\/strong>. Some sites sneakily get around this by initially muting auto-play videos, which is still a distraction. In such cases, you can use the setting <strong>Never Auto-Play<\/strong>; but\u00a0if you like auto-playing media \u2013\u00a0or find a rare site where it\u2019s used in a non-awful manner \u2013 go for <strong>Allow All Auto-Play<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The last three options (which only appear on some sites) enable you to set whether a site should\u00a0<strong>Allow<\/strong>, <strong>Ask<\/strong> for, or <strong>Deny<\/strong> access to your camera, microphone, and location.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.net\" target=\"_blank\">DarkSky.net<\/a> will ask for permission whenever you click its location button.\u00a0But if you set <strong>Location<\/strong> to <strong>Allow<\/strong>, permission will be assumed, meaning the site will skip past that dialog box and get you right to your local weather.<\/p>\n<h3>Manage existing website settings<\/h3>\n<p>Any settings you define for a site can be reversed by going back to\u00a0<strong>Safari &gt; Settings for This Website<\/strong>\u00a0and editing them. To change a value, simply choose something else from the relevant menu.<\/p>\n<p>For example, to turn off Reader for a specific site, click <strong>Reader<\/strong> in the sidebar, and then change <strong>On<\/strong> to <strong>Off<\/strong> next to the site\u2019s name. This serves as the default value for the current feature. So you could, for example, block auto-play on every site, apart\u00a0from\u00a0a few choice\u00a0ones.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, select <strong>Auto-Play<\/strong> from the <strong>General<\/strong> pane, and set <strong>When visiting other websites<\/strong> to <strong>Never Auto-Play<\/strong>. For any site you want auto-play to work on, set the appropriate value in\u00a0the <strong>Settings for This Website<\/strong> sheet, or its menu in the <strong>Currently Open Websites<\/strong> list mentioned above.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<div>\n<p><strong>New to Mac?
